Aqualung Fusion Drysuits - 3 Different Sizes in 1 Suit
When diving in cold water, one of the most important equipment is "Drysuits". In my case, if the water temperature hit 23C degree, I do not want to dive in wetsuits. I will take my drysuits out. For most of divers, probably somewhere about 16-18C degree water temperature is the reference to change their suits.
Now, let me talk about Aqualung Fusion Suits. This suits have been in the market for some years. When it was introduced, not many divers appreciated. Main reason was that it was so different from other suits that many divers found it very strange and uncomfortable. There were lots of misunderstanding about how to put them on or how to use them. In last few years, this has slowly but surely started changing. Many Dive Schools now use the Fusion suits because it is very easy to use for new divers.
Aqualung Fusion Suits are constructed with 2 layers; inner "bag" and outer skin. Outer skin is very stretchy material, constantly squeezing the inner "bag". This inner "bag" is, on the other hand, extremely BIG! This let 3 different size of people to share the same drysuits.
In Wetsuits, as you may already know, you will be "wet"; water gets trapped between the suit and your skin and works as insulation. Drysuits, on the other hand, you do not get wet. You stay dry. The suit traps air or another gas, acting as an insulator.
While Wetsuits are made from neoprene, various materials are used to make Drysuits; neoprene, coated fabric, crushed neoprene, trilaminate, etc. Each material has different insulation and flexibility. It will be your choice to make to pick what drysuits you like to use.
Let's see how much air it can hold. |
FYI, he is quite slim person!! |
Because of this excess room in the inner bag, thin under suits or thick under suits, whichever you choose, the flexibility of the suits will be the same.
The key point of this suits is you need to know how to put them on correctly. If you do not put them on correctly, this flexibility will be completely lost and it will be very uncomfortable.
Since outer layer is constantly squeezing the inner bag, the great benefit is that you hardly get excess air trapped in the suits. Also it is very unlikely to get air trapped in your boots. Ascending is also much easier than other kinds of drysuits.
Negative factor is probably lack of insulation. You will need good inner suits to gain your insulation, especially good thick warm socks.
Because of this different character, PADI, in fact, has Fusion Drysuits Specialty Course, separated from regular Drysuits Specialty Course.
If you are struggling buoyancy with drysuits, this Fusion suits may be an option to gain better control.
If you have good fitting comfortable drysuits, cold water diving is not scary at all!!
